Experienced Planning Guidance, Grounded in Practical Judgment

how we work

A strategic approach grounded in context.

We start by understanding what you’re trying to accomplish, where you are in the process, and what questions need attention. From there, we focus on what matters most, explain what we’re seeing in plain language, and help you chart a practical way forward. Some projects need a focused answer; others benefit from support as new questions arise. Our role adapts to what the project requires.

WORKING ACROSS LOCATIONS

Local knowledge. Broader perspective.

Planning is local. Regulations, processes, and decision-making structures can vary significantly from one jurisdiction to another, making local context an important part of any project. UrbanKind brings deep experience with Washington, DC’s planning, zoning, land use, and development review processes, shaped by work both inside DC government and in private land use practice. That experience is complemented by work across other communities and regulatory environments, bringing a broader perspective to how we understand projects and the paths available to move them forward.

Much of our work can also be done remotely. Whether you're nearby or working with us from another location, we'll start by understanding the local framework, the project context, and where our experience can add value. When a question requires local expertise or coordination beyond our role, we'll be clear about that too.

OUR VALUES

What guides our work.

The advice we give is important, but so is the way we work. These principles shape how we approach each conversation, recommendation, and project.

Clarity

We explain planning and zoning in plain language so you can make informed decisions with confidence.

Integrity

We’ll give you honest guidance, even when that means identifying concerns or recommending a different path.

Stewardship

We consider the broader context of each decision and how the choices made today may shape a project, a place, and the community around it.

Partnership

We listen carefully, work collaboratively, and bring different perspectives into the conversation to help find a practical way forward.

Let's talk about what comes next.

Whether you’re just getting started or working through a planning or zoning question, tell us about your project, what you’re trying to accomplish, or where you’re feeling uncertain. We’ll help you clarify what matters and identify a practical path forward.
